I’m Haruto Oikawa. I am currently studying Art at Emporia State University in Kansas, focusing on Graphic Design while also exploring photography and painting.

Through design’s sense of structure, photography’s eye for observation, and painting’s sensitivity to color, I move between these perspectives to capture the quiet beauty hidden in everyday life.

I also work as a Design Editor for The ESU Bulletin, the university’s newspaper, where I create graphics such as upcoming event visuals and story covers.

How I See

The artworks try to be simple and clear, so the message can go straight to the viewer. The photographs try to make the viewer feel beauty, or to feel something that pulls them in. If even for one second, the viewer can be captured by my work, then I feel success. In general, my works are “calm.” I often put a focal point inside a quiet space, so that the viewer is naturally drawn into the world that I see.

My process is different depending on the medium. For posters and graphic design, I make sketches carefully, because I need to organize information and communicate clearly to the viewer. For paintings and photos, I want to show what I feel when it is still fresh, so I work more directly and intuitively. The most exciting moments are different in each medium: in design, when my ideas start to take shape on the artboard; in painting, when my memory of the scene grows again on the canvas; and in photography, when I find a composition that feels beautiful. I think composition is the most important element. It gives balance, leads the eye, and makes the main subject clear. Even simple work can tell strongly if the composition works.

My work does not have one repeating motif, but I often use blue and achromatic colors. These colors bring calm and also draw the viewer’s attention. For me, beauty means the moment something catches in my heart. For example, in the library stacks, light comes through the window and falls on one book. The colors, the subject, the angle, and even the weather all connect, and I feel beauty that I can not explain with words. I believe such small and ordinary moments hide true beauty. Through my work, I try to show that I enjoy art, and I hope the viewer can also feel my joy or awareness.
My work is influenced by Claude Monet and Impressionism, and also by David Hockney’s “Joiner”. From Impressionism, I learned how to find a reality that only I can see in the atmosphere and in the ambiguity of a single moment. Not everything we see is sharp, and sometimes the unclear parts make reality stronger. From Hockney, I learned how showing many viewpoints at once is closer to how humans really see. I also try to use uncertainty and multiple perspectives to explore what is “real.”

Art is like a language. It helps me express feelings and ideas that I cannot put into words. Making art also helps me reflect on my own vision and grow. Continuing art is important for my future career. I want to work in creative fields like graphic design and photography and also try new areas such as furniture design. Because I love art, I can work hard, and I believe “when I am doing what I like with all my heart, I am unstoppable.” My dream is to work together as a graphic designer or furniture designer, but also continue as a photographer or painter, in other words, as an artist. Art is already part of my life. Even the smallest moment of beauty is important to me, and I want to keep believing in it and expressing it.
